Just a Spoonful of Corn Syrup!

The world is interesting. The older I get, the more I realize that the world rarely teaches truth. This is apparent in the media, as everything is objective. Politics are the obvious one, with Democrats watching CNN for the slant they want and Republicans sticking with Fox News. We were told by the Clinton Administration that Fannie Mae needed to lend to unqualified people back in 1999, so that every American could own a house. Today, we look at the failure of mortgage companies everywhere. Maybe that was a bad idea! Al Gore has taught us for years all about global warming. We all know the fallacy of that. At least he invented the internet : )

Well, I don't know who to blame for the scare that has been presented to America about how terrible corn syrup is for you, especially high fructose corn syrup. We've been warned to avoid it like the plague. Recently, there has been big news about this. This too was a farce.

Here are some corn syrup facts from the Corn Refiners Association:

1. The American Medical Association (AMA) recently concluded that "high fructose corn syrup does not appear to contribute to obesity more than other caloric sweeteners."

2. Research confirms that high fructose corn syrup is safe and nutritionally the same as table sugar.

3. High fructose corn syrup has the same number of calories as table sugar and is equal in sweetness. It contains no artificial or synthetic ingredients.

4. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted high fructose corn syrup "Generally Recognized as Safe" status for use in food, and reaffirmed that ruling in 1996 after thorough review.

5. High fructose corn syrup offers numerous benefits. It keeps food fresh, enhances fruit and spice flavors, retains moisture in bran cereals, helps keep breakfast and energy bars moist, maintains consistent flavors in beverages and keeps ingredients evenly dispersed in condiments.

Take this quiz and see what you really know about sweeteners. I didn't do so hot on mine. I'm told I need to study my sweeteners better.
