After just one month hiatus, I’m pleased to say that the carpool will return. It has been nice sleeping in, but I’ve become lazy. I am rarely self-motivated when it comes to exercise. I do much better when I have someone to do it with, especially when it means getting up early. The other good part of this schedule change is that I will be done work at 3:30 each day. I was spoiled for so long, it’s hard to keep working past 4 : ) Oh, and did I mention I get good company in the car instead of just books on CD? Really, the good company is only there when people are awake, it’s really not that thrilling to watch people sleep. Well, unless Aaron is talking in his sleep (you can seriously carry on a conversation with him in his loopy state).
Today I heard about a group, Drive 55 Conservation Project, which is proposing the entire nation max out our freeway speed at 55, supposedly saving us trillions of dollars in gas. I don’t think it would make much difference as we’d all be on the freeway much longer. Then if we aren’t off as quick as we used to be more people will get out of work, making more cars, more crowding, slowing everyone down and thus burning more gas. Besides, who wants to drive any slower than we do already?
If they want the nation to save more money on gas, find ways to promote and encourage carpooling. Utah would like to have more people use the carpool lane or just charge money for any type of fast lane, thus deterring interest in having a carpool, unless your motive in carpooling is to save the planet.

Hi Justin--Camilla here. My brother is very much into "hyper-miling" and has been going 55 mph on the freeway for a long time now. In his 10+ year old Saturn he is getting more than 50 mgp. I tried it for awhile when I was commuting to West Jordan to teach (30 minute commute) and going around 55 only added another 5 minutes or so, if that. He has an entire blog devoted to this sort of stuff. It's kinda interesting.

I guess having better mileage does sound good. I'm just not patient enough. I'm bugged to ride in a car going under the speed limit and definitely do that or more when I'm behind the wheel. Maybe I should slow down and think more practically instead of adding to the rush of life : )
